There’s also the 3,500 acres that wrap around Combe House Devon, the Bronze-age burial site on top of the hill and the huge oak door that leads into the enormous Great Hall where an open fire roars.
But best of all at Combe is the way things are done. Not for Ruth and Ken the stuffy formality that you might expect of an Elizabethan manor house. Instead, you can kick off your shoes and curl up on a sofa, or throw a log on the fire, then fall asleep in front of it.
It’s informal, relaxing and hugely romantic, and wherever you wander (and there’s quite a bit of it) something magnificent catches the eye. Expect all the aristocratic trimmings: plaster moulded ceilings, mullioned windows, cavernous sofas and massive old oils hanging on the walls. There’s even a separate thatched cottage set in private walled garden you can rent for two.
